While it now serves as a crucial recreational resource for its surrounding rural communities, this project (and its site in particular) faced many hurdles in the transition from an idea to reality.
Because of its location outside the boundaries of its local townships and their utility services, the water infrastructure serving this was site was undersized and inadequate for a sprinkler system that would typically be considered necessary for such a large occupancy and structure. Our design team conducted an incredibly thorough and careful code review to ensure that the client’s program needs could be met under local building, fire, and safety regulations while avoiding spending a large proportion of the planned construction budget on installing an upgraded water service line to the site.
After extensive reviews and collaborations with local code authorities, this new basketball arena was completed and began its purpose as the local home for amateur and youth sports programs, tournaments, and more. Highlighting its importance within its community, after its first year of operations it has been so successful and constantly in demand that we are now assisting the client with a major expansion on the site that will add a range of expanded and new functions, all while maintaining the necessary separations and requirements to meet those exact same code requirements that dictated so much of the initial building’s design.
