When a couple on the verge of retirement moved into a beautiful and charming Craftsman home to be closer to their children and upcoming grandchildren, they knew that many original aspects of the home would need to be updated to better serve their needs in terms of both aging in place as well as to better reflect their personalities and interests.
Through a collaborative design process, it was decided that a moderately-sized two-story addition to the rear of the house would help to provide additional space for a guest room, play spaces for grandchildren, rooms to enjoy their own hobbies, and more while still maintaining a reasonable construction budget. Additionally, some key upgrades to the existing spaces would allow for a more comfortable primary bedroom suite, a more expansive kitchen and adjacent deck for hosting, and a more natural entryway into the home from the driveway rather than the front of the house.
The house’s new owners were also intent on honoring its long history, with the project and construction requiring very careful attention to detailing and material choices in terms of both historical appropriateness as well as a seamless integration with the existing design elements.
The resulting spaces have greatly improved the residents’ comfort within their home, as it now feels like a much better fit for their shifting routines as they transition into grandparenthood and retirement. Their unique and eclectic decor, gathered over the years and from their travels, are displayed proudly and feel right at home in their new spaces. New decks on either side of the house are flanked by large garden beds that will quickly grow into vibrant backdrops for relaxing mornings reading in solitude.
