Collaboration and partnerships are crucial to successful design, especially under tight constraints. This project exemplifies how our partnership with Growing Together aimed to create vivid and beautiful housing at a scale and affordability appropriate to the surrounding neighborhood.
One of our key affordable housing partners is Growing Together, a housing nonprofit that is passionately working to improve housing access in Tulsa’s Kendall Whittier neighborhood, a hub for the local Latinx community. Through their efforts, residents have maintained consistent access to better affordable housing, which creates a stable foundation for all aspects of daily life - employment, education, social, emotional and physical health, etc.
While this project started as a thorough renovation, exploratory demolition showed that the structure was far more compromised than initially expected. After much discussion, it was decided that the better long-term decision was to demolish the existing structure and rebuild a similarly-sized new home in its place.
While the overall size and scope of the house was similar to the previous structure, it was designed and built to prioritize occupant health and comfort. Higher levels of insulation combine with an efficient mini split system to provide thermal comfort year-round. The included water heater, appliances, and fixtures were specifically selected to reduce utility costs for the families living here. And the many windows reduce dependency on artificial lighting by bringing sunlight and views deep into the living spaces. Finally, more expressive colors and materials help this project avoid the sterile appearance of many modern residential projects, providing warm and beauty that make the space feel more welcoming and personal.
Our team has supported Growing Together through multiple renovations, additions, and new construction of high quality affordable single-family homes across the neighborhood. The throughline through these various projects is a particular focus on balancing cost efficiency and material longevity with creating beautiful spaces that the residents can be proud of. Materials, fixtures, and casework were carefully selected throughout these projects. Vibrant and colorful focal points balance with minimal and timeless surfaces, creating a sophisticated overall impression with highly affordable and durable components.
